The Labour Group in the Forest District Council won a significant victory for the local area in July when their proposal for the Forest’s own birthing facility was unanimously passed. Even though there is no actual maternity unit any more in our area, many mothers still elect to give birth in the Forest …anybody born “within the hundred of St Briavels” qualifies automatically as a “Freeminer” and has exclusive rights to the minerals of the Forest of Dean. Midwives will visit peoples’ homes to assist with giving birth but there are many occasions when the home is not suitable, and the Labour Group argued that some provision should be made by The Health Service, even if it’s just a suitably equipped clean room. “If you don’t push you don’t get” said Di Martin one of the Labour Councillors who made the motion: the upshot is that a letter from the Council has strongly recommended that The Health Service offer the facility, and Di has promised that she’ll see it through.
